He probably was a late bloomer and faced rejection during his formative years. It's better to be good looking/NT at 15 and then start getting fat and balding in your mid to late 30s. The acceptance and experiences you got during your formative years will give you lots of confidence and self esteem for the rest of your life (unless something drastic happens). But if you're a late bloomer and get better looking well into your 20s, but had rejection and missed experiences during your formative years, that can have a very negative impact on your confidence and self esteem.
