Prosecutors say Kuzev did not conceal his age in their exchanges and stated openly that he was 37. Supervising prosecutor Anelia Trifonova said that in the minds of the young people, the meeting was an attempt to confront a supposed pedophile, modeled on the self-styled "pedophile hunter" groups active on social media, though investigators stress the aim was not to detain the man and call police, but to attack him.

The assault caused catastrophic injuries: broken ribs and ruptures of the lung, liver and kidneys, along with severe head trauma. Some of the teenagers filmed the beating on their phones and posted footage to social media, and prosecutors say they have obtained those recordings, including from the defendants' own devices. The judge said the group afterward took 30 euros from the victim and used it to buy doner kebabs.
