Way before the advent of the social medias+ smartphones+ dating apps mixture, dating was way better for an average Joe here'a why:
1.The times and culture were not overtly hostile toward men as a whole.
Something like cold-approaching was not seen as an act of predatory nor the approacher as an evil harasser. In fact, a lot of girls weren't bothered by it since men were allowed to be men back then.
2. Girls used to put efforts In order to meet someone
Nowadays, a girl can afford to get weight, to no maintain herself and to not own any particular skills and still would get many offers due to the hoeflation phenomenon. A girl back then was obligated to put some efforts in order to meet someone, whether it was about her physic or her social skills.
3. Girls weren't all mini-celebreties
Due to the social medias culture, almost every girl has been elevated to a certain high status by default. Even one average-looking chick knows that all what she has to do in order to get famous is to create an IG account of her showing her cleavage. Even one random girl who is not particularly into social medias is also by default aware of this and could at any moment join this tendancy.
4. Less competition, more opportunities
Because the dynamic was saner and more balanced. An average Joe with a bit of consistency could even dated up if he wanted it. Nowadays, an average Joe has to jump through an unimaginable amounts of hoops in order to get a girl that is not even of a decent-quality (whether from a looks or a personality standpoint).

For all the reasons mentionned above, it is now asked for the average man to do an astronomical work in so many departments. You need more social status than ever before (not being on social medias can often be detrimental), make any activity that pertains the improvement of your looks as your second or third-job,etc..
