My plan is to maybe go and teach English in China from around July, but after seeing my uni friends for the first time in 2 years, I want to see them more, so idk if I wanna be in China. Good group of friends and we’re basically the same as then

Also, even if I go in July, that would be almost 4 months without a job if I can’t find anything

My last job was better than being NEET, and I was earning and saving. Rn I’m depending on my parents and not padding my savings

I’ve been offered jobs in Hangzhou and Fushun. Fushun is too cold for me. I probably won’t take the Hangzhou one cos I’m still not sure, and it was only my second interview

See if you can go to any tier 1 cities, such as Shenzhen or Shanghai. Your quality of life will be better.

The wage and housing allowance in smaller cities seems to go further, as the jobs I’ve seen in tier 1 cities don’t seem to pay much more

I stay in hostels, eat one meal a day, walk a lot, take public transport and volunteer.

Why are tier 1 cities better?

Because non-tier1 cities are third world, the tier 1 cities will surprise you, not what you think of when you think of non-Western countries. Everything in China is still relatively cheap compared to the UK (you said you live near London right?), so there's no point settling for "third world" cities just because your allowance can be stretched marginally further. That's my take though.

But are you living off savings or parents or what? Hostels etc still require money. And you’ll become emaciated on one meal a day

Hangzhou is not bad. China can be really fun and surprise you. If housing is the main issue, then you can settle for a tier 2 city if you want. Food and entertainment is cheap, they treat foreigners relatively well compared to other countries as well. If you're a good looking foreigner (in this case I'd say if you like hmtn+ jfl), you might even get specail treatment because they think "wow this guy is exotic and good looking".

I was born there and have lived there. I was born and lived in a tier 1 city. I am now in the West though.
