Baseline Comparison (5-Year Marital Dissolution Rates)
Looking at the raw 5-year divorce rates for first marriages in the sample:- 0 premarital partners (other than eventual spouse): ~7% divorce rate in the first 5 years.
- 1 to 8 premarital partners: ~18% divorce rate in the first 5 years.
- Increase: An approximate 150% to 160% relative increase in divorce risk compared to the 0-partner group.
- 9 or more premarital partners: ~30% divorce rate in the first 5 years.
- Increase: An approximate 330% relative increase (more than 4x the risk) compared to those with 0 partners, and about a 65% increase compared to the 1–8 group.
Statistical Hazard Ratios (Controlling for Early-Life Factors)
When applying event history regression models that control for adolescent background (religiosity, family structure, depression, personality traits, and values):- 1 to 8 partners: Individuals experienced roughly a 60% to 80% higher relative odds/hazard of divorce compared to those with 0 partners.
- 9 or more partners: Individuals experienced roughly a 100% to 150%+ higher relative odds/hazard of divorce (2x to 2.5x the baseline risk) compared to those with 0 partners.
Summary
- Compared to virginity / spouse-only premarital sex: Having premarital partners raises the odds of divorce within 5 years by 150% to over 300% in raw terms (and roughly 60% to 150%+ after adjusting for adolescent background and personal characteristics).
- Between gender groups: The percentage increase is identical for men and women.
