Since fat disposition is based on genetics, will training the muscles where this fat is most present help that area shape up better than others with less fat? For example, face, thighs, torso?

Training specific muscles in areas with higher fat deposition does not necessarily lead to better shaping of those areas compared to others with less fat. Fat distribution is largely influenced by genetic factors, and while exercise can improve muscle tone and overall body composition, it does not specifically target fat loss in localized areas.

Genetic Influence on Fat Distribution

  • Genetic factors significantly influence body fat distribution, with certain genetic variants linked to how fat is stored in different body regions, such as visceral versus subcutaneous fat1 4 5 6.
  • Heritability studies show that traits like waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) have a genetic component, although the influence varies across different measures of fat distribution4 9 10.

Exercise and Fat Distribution

  • While exercise can lead to overall fat loss and improved muscle mass, it does not specifically target fat loss in particular areas. The body's response to exercise, including fat loss, is influenced by genetic predispositions2 3.
  • Behavioral factors, such as physical activity, can influence overall body composition but have a limited effect on altering genetically determined fat distribution patterns10.

Conclusion

Genetic factors play a crucial role in determining where fat is stored in the body, and while exercise can improve overall fitness and body composition, it does not specifically target fat loss in localized areas. Therefore, training muscles in areas with higher fat deposition will not necessarily lead to better shaping of those areas compared to others with less fat.
