Active recall study method

I always hear about it online but there are quite a few ineffective methods (imo) being recommended as well, so I wanted to hear your thoughts.
Have you tried it and how have your experiences been with it so far?

Looking for something that's suited for quite large amounts of not too complex content.

Seems like everyone is using this already.
Always learned more passively.. guess I did decently well but felt pretty inefficient, especially recently.
