It doesn't necessarily work like that. It's the BAC water that has the chance of going bad (it will turn white due to bacterial buildup). This usually happens at 3-4 weeks, but it could theoretically never happen if you use alcohol wipes and clean it without it having contact with any outside substance. You'll know if it has a weird color and it's not clear anymore.
The powder will go well for 2 years, and then it will likely be less effective.
