I want to preface this by saying this i first post on this forum and im still learning the ropes of collecting accurate data about these topics and writing effective reports

My goal was to observe how taking Adderall before a workout would affect both my mental state and my physical performance. Rather than trying to prove whether it objectively improves exercise, my idea was simply to document my own experience as accurately as possible. Before this session, I understood that Adderall is a central nervous system stimulant commonly prescribed for ADHD and that it increases dopamine and norepinephrine activity, which can improve focus and alertness while also increasing heart rate, blood pressure, and body temperature. Because these effects overlap with the body's natural response to exercise, I expected there could be both positive and negative outcomes.

For this observation, I paid close attention to factors such as my sleep, hydration, nutrition, motivation, focus, workout performance, physical sensations, and any side effects that occurred during or after training. The following report records my experience as objectively as possible, using my normal workouts as a point of comparison.

Experimental Variables

Medication

  • Drug: Adderall (Immediate Release)
  • Total Dose: 37.5 mg
  • Time Taken: Early afternoon
  • Workout Start: Approximately 45 minutes after ingestion
  • First dose of the day

Control Variables

  • Sleep: 9 hours (10:00 PM–7:00 AM)
  • Hydration: Consistently well hydrated (typically >1800 mL/day)
  • Food: None before workout (fasted)
  • Other stimulants: None (no caffeine or pre-workout)

Workout Protocol

Warm-up

  • Pull-ups (all grip variations), 2 sets to failure
  • Dips, 2 sets to failure
  • Hanging leg raises, 2 sets to failure

Main Workout

Primarily:

  • Back machines
  • Shoulder exercises
  • Triceps exercises

Training style:

  • Most sets performed to muscular failure

Duration:

  • Approximately 90 minutes

Intensity:

  • 9/10

Subjective Observations

Before Training

Energy:

  • 6/10

Motivation:

  • Moderate—not unusually high before entering the gym.

During Training

Mental Effects

Focus:

  • 9/10
  • Felt highly locked in on moving weight.
  • Minimal distraction from surroundings.
  • Time appeared to pass faster than usual.

Mood:

  • Mild euphoria.
  • Felt "warm," "zippy," and mentally driven.

Performance

Observed improvements included:

  • New personal records on calisthenics movements.
  • Heavier lifting than usual.
  • Greater overall workout volume.
  • Shorter rest periods between sets.
  • Greater willingness to continue training.

Perceived fatigue:

  • Reduced during exercise.
  • Felt capable of pushing significantly harder.

Physical Effects

Heart rate:

  • Subjectively slightly elevated.

Muscle pump:

  • Noticeably stronger than normal.

Coordination:

  • Similar to baseline or slightly improved.

Sweating:

  • Approximately unchanged.

Side effects during training:

  • Dry mouth
  • Mild jitteriness
  • Increased body warmth

No:

  • Dizziness
  • Nausea

Post-Workout Observations

Immediately afterward:

  • Very warm
  • Extremely tired physically

Appetite:

  • Weak

Medication duration:

  • Effects continued well into the night.

Sleep:

  • Unable to fall asleep.

Additional side effects:

  • Racing thoughts
  • Near panic attack with paranoid features

Comparison to Baseline

Compared with a typical workout without Adderall:

  • Greater concentration
  • Improved perceived performance
  • Increased training volume
  • New personal records
  • Stronger muscle pump
  • Faster-paced workout
  • More enjoyable overall experience

Negative differences:

  • Significant insomnia
  • Pronounced stimulant after-effects
  • Anxiety/paranoia later in the day

Conclusion

Overall, this workout was one of the most focused and productive training sessions I have experienced. During the workout, I felt extremely locked in, mentally engaged, and determined to continue pushing through difficult sets.

Despite these positive effects, the negative effects afterward were significant. The stimulation lasted well into the night, completely preventing me from sleeping. I also experienced a loss of appetite, persistent racing thoughts, and a brief episode of anxiety that nearly developed into a panic attack. Looking back, while the workout itself felt exceptionally productive and enjoyable, the after-effects had a substantial impact on the rest of my day, I hope my findings and experience can help you gather information as to whether Adderall can be used as an effective preworkout supplement. I will continue to research this and other topics so expect more posts, thanks, don't clown me cuz i used chat gpt to summarize my journal. peace.
