Life Expectancy Reduction:
A major UK study published in 2025 found adults with diagnosed ADHD lose approximately 7 years of life expectancy (men) and 9 years (women) compared to the general population.
Earlier research by Dr. Russell Barkley found an even larger gap of 11-13 years reduced life expectancy in adults with ADHD.
Mortality Rate Comparisons:
A large Lancet study found the mortality rate was 5.85 per 10,000 person-years in people with ADHD versus 2.21 in those without — roughly 2.6 times higher
Death rates in studies show approximately 0.83% of men with ADHD died during study periods versus 0.52% of controls, and 2.22% of women with ADHD versus 1.35% of controls.
