Watch some prison documentaries and you will see a lot of the older guys talk about how they just couldn't realize the consequences when they were younger.

Prison is the kind of environment that actually forces a lot of these dudes to have to think more than one step ahead because there is no way out, nobody is trying to save them and it can always get worse the more they misbehave. That simple constraint makes all the difference for many of them. They are finally in an environment where acting impulsively has infinitely negative value. They can't complain, they can't fight, the only thing left is to strategize.

It doesn't always work but it's the only thing I've seen really work for the worst of them.
