my instinct is to take the blame off yourself and get her to press the metaphorical button of no return. assuming you want to continue having relationships, having your gf initiate the breakup means she makes the first move, and you can be poised to counterattack with whatever you want. lay the blame on her because she chose to breakup, spread lies or rumours, farm pity from friends, appear to take the moral high ground by cutting contact and 'forgiving', the choice is yours. you now get to play the victim card, which in the situation is arguably better than the offensive route due to the potential of pity points.

if you yourself choose to break up, you will choose a reason and the reason is thenceforth set in stone, making it harder to change. you can spin a story, but the truth (of whatever reason you cited) remains. this is the offensive - you end up having more immediate power, but you also open yourself up to attack from many more fronts.
