Will palatal expansion help me ascend, or is the aesthetic risk not worth it?

I’ve been considering speaking with an orthodontist about palatal expansion, mainly for the potential aesthetic benefits. From what I understand, expansion can increase maxillary width, improve dental arch form, and in some cases positively affect facial balance and airway function. My concern is that I’ve also seen a number of cases where people claim they actually descended after expansion, either due to unwanted facial changes, asymmetry, soft tissue effects, or simply ending up with a wider face that didn’t suit their features. For those who have researched this extensively or undergone expansion themselves, how predictable are the aesthetic outcomes? Is there any reliable way to determine whether someone is a good candidate from a looksmaxxing perspective before committing to treatment?

I’m interested in both the potential upsides and the risks. I’d rather avoid making a change that could negatively affect my facial aesthetics long-term

In your case I think it'd do more good than harm 100%, your maxilla doesn't have that V shape but it doesn't look like it's wide either, slightly on the narrower end. Results are definitely predictable, you can expect slight infraorbital growth, more upward CT and slightly more prominent zygos

adjust the screw and disengage when ur satisfied with the results, don't go overboard unless u wanna look like JawHacks

Nah it could potentially work, but it would highlight ur asymmetries more.

You’re probably the first person here who’s given me a genuinely helpful answer, so thanks.

I’ve actually been thinking about going with a slower expansion protocol so I can keep an eye on any changes and hopefully avoid unwanted aesthetic effects.

One thing I’m still unsure about though: if I don’t like the direction things are going, can I just ask my orthodontist to stop expanding, or is it more of a commitment where you have to see the treatment through once you’ve started?

Just trying to understand how much control you realistically have over the process.

Obviously you can stop anytime you want, but it depends on the timing

If the sutures are split, you're gonna want to keep the mechanism in your mouth until new bone ossifies and settles in
(without expansion)
if they aren't, he can just remove the mechanism and you're good to go

but u can stop the expansion at any time yeah
