Many people think Afghanistan was the "graveyard of empires" simply because the Soviet Union collapsed after their loss in Afghanistan and the Afghanistan war accelerated US decline, but historically speaking Afghanistan was very easily conquered by multiple empires such as the Persians (Achaemenids, Sassanians, Saffarid, Tahirid, and Samanid), Greeks, Kushan Scythians, Hephthalite Huns, Turks Shahis, Ghaznavid Turks, Seljuk Turks, Khwarizm Turks, Mongols, Timurids, Safavid Turks, and Afsharid Turks.
The British might have lost their first war against Afghanistan, but they won the second one and essentially controlled Afghanistan as a vassal state from 1880-1919.
The only reason why the Soviets lost to Afghan mujahedeen was because of foreign aid, so yes the US artifically manufactured Afghans as some sort of badass warrior race.
