I don't know if it's just me or do African Americans look whiter and less african looking then africans ? Like African Americans look like a white guy and a black guy combined while Africans look full black.

They are, African-Americans have on average nearly 20% European DNA. Though, I wouldn’t say they look mixed, just lighter skinned black.

Many have a lot of euro dna. For some reason, mulattos are considered black in the us. In all other nations they are not.

Cherripicked examples tbh. I know a ethopian woman that married a guy I knew and she looks nothing like most African-Americans. Purely African populations look very different from African-Americans. The further South you go the more obvious the difference becomes. Tbh North-Africans probably aren't even purely African.

On average, AA’s will be a bit lighter with lighter colored lips, which makes sense considering their higher % of Euro DNA. But yeah, they essentially look the same.

Most AA’s don’t have East African roots but West African, because the slaves came from West Africa.

I'm not saying this affects things, but consider that African-Americans are different than Africans. African-Americans came from a select number of countries AND were selected (and even bred) for size and strength because they needed good slaves. Also African Americans on average have 20% white DNA

This is mostly true but there are outliers.
Some Semitic and Cushitic speakers from the Horn of Africa look more Caucasian than the average African-American.
Cape Verdeans look more Caucasian than the average African-American.

The Fulbe are kind of like African-Americans where they have a lot of extremes with some of their people clearly Nafri descended and some are unambiguously West African, a lot of that depending on the region because they are very widespread nomads and assimilated other people throughout history.

Tuaregs are on average more Caucasian than African Americans since they are mainly Berber. Although many would be offended to be considered "black" even if a lot tend to have sizable West African admixture :

But they have both extremes depending on the region. Some Tuaregs look 100% "black" and some look 100% Berber. As a whole they tend to be mixed.

I would guess the Gnawa would be on average as Caucasian as African-Americans. But this is not based on anything reliable, I'm just guessing based on the pictures I have seen and I wasn't able to find any study on the subject. Some don't look much different from most West Africans but other are clearly mostly Nafri. They have a similar history in that they are West African diaspora descendants of slaves, but in North Africa

There are also regional differences in how the ancestry of African-Americans is distributed :

The people with the highest African ancestry tend to be from South-Eastern America specifically Florida.
It could be because Florida has a lot of Caribbeans from Haiti and Jamaica. Those studies don't really separate between Caribbean and "ADOS". But then again a lot of those Caribbean diasporas are also on average around 20% African.
It could also be because of the Geechee people who have on average less European ancestry than non-Geechee African Americans.
It could be a combination of all of this.

I agree people online tend to exaggerate how mixed African Americans are. They have a lot of outliers because of the one drop rule and that skews the average.
