It was inspired by Lewis Carrol's relationship with young girls - one was called Alice and he made up the story for her one day.
He would take photos of young girls and have lengthy correspondences with them.
A very eccentric man, put it that way.

I am aware, it was apparently customary at the time. Quite weird to say the least! Although atleast it was based of a childhood friend and usually he was supervised by the young girls parents. Still weird
