I’ve read up on this and researched this because I had this exact same thought too, for the past few years I have believed that the only reason we have gained all of this consciousness, awareness and our very sociable/smart brain is because of survival in group/pact setting, we are just vessels that hold the valuable DNA and you can explain every human behavior as trying to protect its own DNA (talked about a lot in the Selfish Gene), I could go into it even more but it’s depressing for me to think about, but at one point you have to be agnostic towards the “laws” of the world that you think you know and admit your know nothing. I personally believe now that what is determined is limited but your soul is still there to make the choice. God exists outside of time, knowledge does not equal causation, I’ll call it the eternal now because it has been stated that God exists outside of human time with all time being the present. To the people commenting about why he would allow such atrocities to happen, if you read Jeremiah 19:5 it says “they have built places on hilltops to worship Baal, where they burn their children in the fire to Baal” which he did not stop, God allows the free will for these people to commit such atrocities because he will permit them to face the consequences of these choices honoring free will. Actually, let’s say God is not real, then humans are controlled by biology and cause and effect.
The brain is made by DNA and shaped by past experiences.
Even the world around us is influenced by humans, who are themselves shaped by genetics passed down from ancestors.
If we fully understood the brain and the world, we could predict every choice and outcome.
What we call free will would just be the brain following biology and past causes.
This means nothing truly could have happened differently. Everything was always going to happen the way it did.
