I had a M-shaped but zero receding hairline at age 16, then pretty clearly receding hairline at age 20, which have kept consistent for 8 years. Hair was very thick at age 20, gradually thinning but not noticeable until 26 at which point I could see crown was slightly thinner than rest of head. Now at age 28 I can see hair is overall clearly thinner than it used to be 3-4 years ago. Hairline is basically consistent with what it was 8 years ago.

So I'd say, look for hair thinning, thats what gets ya. You can't just look at hairline and make a judgement, many people have a somewhat high/receding hairline but it stays like that for the rest of their lives. My father had the same hairline since he was 20, but kept his hair full well into his 40s. He still has good even coverage but generally thin compared to a young person at age 60.
