America never did. Without a developed beauty culture, Americans tend to substitute power cues for aesthetic ones. That's how you get the bully archetype as the national ideal: tall, loud, muscular, heavy jaw, visible aggression.

The main reason for this is likely because America was a new nation, a conscious break from the old world. Its "culture" was not rooted in millennia of shared myth and art (like the Romans who took from the Greeks, who took from other civilisations) America was a blank slate.

This lead to different specific traits being the beauty standard. individualism, self reliance, and pragmatism. This valued what was functional, not necessarily what was beautiful. A man was judged by his ability to clear land, build a cabin, and survive. Not by his adherence to an artistic ideal of proportion

The early cultural influence of Puritanism in America was deeply suspicious of beauty and sensuality, which were seen as vain and sinful. This created a cultural preference for plainness and utility over ornamentation.
