He wasn't a total idiot, he had many unconventional ideas during invasion of France that worked out really good. There were much worse wartime leaders, Czar Nikolai of Russia for example fucked up the whole massive Russian Empire due to wanting to lead, despite being a uncharismatic moron. First he lost to Japanese 1905 and then got fucked up by Germans in WW1.
But back to Hitler, he did trust his own skills too much. There were much more qualified leaders, literal geniuses of war ready for use. And it's true that he stalled the war effort, because his generals were afraid of his unpredictable behaviour.
