An Introduction to Hairmaxing

Thread songs:

(could'nt pick just one so included them all)

Preface-

As many of you know, Optimizing the many aspects of one's hair is a high roi softmax with a low barrier to entry and relatively low failure rate. The majority of compounds used to optimize the appearance of your hair are topicals, and many of them are available over the counter(otc) at any given pharmacy or retail store. In this thread I will provide sources for the substances mentioned, techniques and methodology (mostly for the application process), a variety of hair growth enhancement options, and more. I hope you find this thread to be helpful, accurate, and interesting. As always if you come across any mistakes I may have made then please inform me of them so that I can try my best to ensure total accuracy. With that being said, let's begin.

Disclaimer-

This thread will not discuss any preventative measures or solutions to hair loss. If you came here for information regarding hair transplants, dutasteride/finasteride sources and dosing, or anything along those lines then I regret to inform you that you will not be satisfied with the contents of this thread.

We will be discussing a few various methods to improve the appearance of one's hair(scalp hair), eyebrows (superciliary hair), eyelashes(cilia), as well as some general information about those and related topics. In this thread, I intend to offer a somewhat brief and surface level introductory guide on how to make some improvements on this singular area of your overall (facial) appearance. As always I encourage you to do your own research. Please consider any specific circumstances you might have that could potentially cause you issues with any of the things discussed below.

Hair Growth-

Hair (scalp hair follicles):

When it comes to hair growth, there is a decent variety of options for maximization. For the scalp hair, the best options include; oral minoxidil, topical minoxidil, derma-rolling (along the hairline), and tretinoin (anti-inflammatory properties can in-directly aid hair growth). A standard protocol for scalp hair growth will include practices like nightly or every other day (EOD) dermarolling, and application (for topical minoxidil) or consumption (for oral minoxidil) of minoxidil. minoxidil and derma rollers can be purchased online off of amazon, or in person from some pharmacies. However the dermarollers might be slightly hard to find in person at a store in your area, and minoxidil can also occasionally be hard to find. Dermarollers are easy to purchase online, and the best spike length for the actual spikes on the roller would be 0.5 mm. minoxidil can also be purchased online very easily, but the highest concentration that is commonly available on websites such as amazon is 5%. 5% is adequate and will likely provide satisfactory results, but 10% will work faster and in some ways better. 10% topical minoxidil can be found on indiamart and possibly some other gray market online vendors. All in all though, minoxidil is not hard to source at all and neither is a derma roller. Oral minoxidil is another good option. The rule of system options being better than topical ones does apply in this case for the most part. If you are considering using oral minoxidil, I would suggest you familiarize yourself with the set of side effects it has. Side effects of oral minoxidil include; lightheadedness, unideal increases in body hair growth, and in very rare cases, severe cardiovascular (heart) complications. If you are aware of any family or individual pre-existing dispositions to cardiovascular issues, then I would advise against using oral minoxidil. Additionally if you are using PED’s that interact with the cardiovascular system then it might not be the best idea to use oral minoxidil.

Eyebrows & Eyelashes (superciliary & cilia follicles):

For growing the eyebrows and eyelashes there are a few other options to look into.
Most of the suggestions for how to grow your scalp hair will apply here as well. Similarly most of those methods and basically any hair growth method will be applicable to any type of hair growth. As mentioned above, derma rolling and oral/topical minoxidil can be used to grow the eyebrows. For the eyelashes, minoxidil can also be used but if it gets into your eyes it can cause mild to severe discomfort and in some cases partial(and temporary) blindness. The best way to apply topical minoxidil to the eyelashes and eyebrows would be with a small brush, cotton applicator, or spoolie. The topical minoxidil should be applied gently and sparingly to the desired area. After that you can use your fingers or a paper towel to lightly rub it into the skin and push it towards any specific places where you would like to see more growth (and away from places you might not want to be affected). In general, you want to target the area between the eyes and the bottom of the eyebrow and the central mass of hair of the eyebrow. This way you can slowly shift the positioning of your eyebrows and lower them which will improve the appearance of your eye area in general (I will explain this further in the grooming and management section). An option that is even better than minoxidil for growing your eyebrow and eyelash hair would be lattise(bimatoprost) This is a more potent topical that can be used and applied in the same ways I described for how to go about minoxidil usage. However latisse is better suited for growing the eyelashes than the eyebrows. It is formulated specifically for the eyelashes and should be applied in very small amounts with caution and care. It can and probably will also help with eyebrow growth but it is intended for the eyelashes so the decision to use it for the eyebrows and eyelashes or to just use it on the eyelashes is up to the user to make. Lattise is known (and proven) to cause mild to severe fat deposit depletion. If you use it too often, incorrectly, or are pre-disposed to fat deposit depletion, then it may be detrimental to use lattise.

Less conventional options:

Some less common methods to increase hair growth include using topical caffeine serums, tadalafil (increasing blood flow can indirectly push hair follicles above the outer dermal layer), HGH (extends the duration of natural hair growth phases), and all the other topical that are discussed such as castor oil, peppermint oil, and things along those lines. I think out of all these methods and other such unconventional methods, the most effective would be HGH usage because it is the most direct and there is a lot of anecdotal evidence to support its effects on hair growth. I would advise against using castor oil or anything like that because the results are not on-par in terms of effectiveness with minoxidil and they are only negligibly safer than minoxidil.

Dyeing -

Hair (scalp hair follicles):

For dyeing your hair, the main options include DIY box dyes, or professional salon hair dyeing. Salon hair dyeing options are rather straightforward. The way to go about this is to simply search for local salons with good reviews and explain exactly what coloring you would like. Box dyes are also fairly easy to use. In general you should try to use a color that will give you the most contrast without it looking uncanny. The application for box dyes are explained within the box dye packaging and are very easy to follow. You will ideally want to use semi-permanant or temporary box dyes. This way you can re-dye your hair back to a shade close to its baseline hue or just wait for the dye to wear off (or just cut it off when your hair grows out). This way if you do not feel happy with your results you will only have to put up with it for a short amount of time or you can reverse (re-dye it) it if you see that as necessary.

Here is a youtube tutorial on how to use box dye

Eyebrows & Eyelashes (superciliary & cilia follicles):

For eyebrows, the best option is just for men's products. You can use either the beard or scalp hair dye products. The beard dye has a built-in applicator and the pigment lasts for about 24 hours. The applicator is a simple spoolie like device that can be used to brush the dye onto the eyebrows and eyelashes. Avoid contaminating the skin surrounding these areas with dye as it is somewhat hard to wash off. After applying the dye from the applicator let it sit on the eyebrows and eyelashes for about one minute. After one minute use your fingers to rub in the dye. Then use a damp towel with lotion or petroleum jelly on it to wash off any excess dye that did not attach to the hair. This will help you to avoid using too much dye and making your eyebrows look unnaturally colored (especially bad with dark colored dyes). It will also clean any dye that you may have smeared onto the surrounding skin. Do not leave any dye on the skin if you can avoid it. It is very noticeable and looks like unhealthy skin. The other option is the semi permanent anti-gray hair dye. This product comes in a tube with an attachable applicator that is screwed onto the tube. Use the applicator to squeeze the dye out and then take a spoolie and use that to gently and lightly apply it to the eyebrows and eyelashes. Then wipe off the excess with the same damp towel and petroleum jelly method explained above. You can also use eyebrow powder makeup or eyebrow pencils. This should be used very lightly to fill in the eyebrows and make them look more dense and thick. After brushing or drawing on the powder you can use your fingers to wipe off any excess until it looks natural and undetectable. Some dyes like the ones mentioned have ingredients that can cause some negative side effects, mainly delayed or stopped hair growth in the areas to which they are applied. As far as I know, just for men products are safe and will not cause this problem. Regardless, I encourage you to do your own research and avoid hair growth issues at all costs when using dyes.

Coloring optimization-

In order to find the best color for you, consult a hair colorimetry wheel. You should select and try the colors that are close to or are opposite from your skin tone and/or baseline hair color. The eyebrows and eyelashes should be dyed darker than your scalp hair. You can dye both your scalp and eyebrow and eyelash hair jett (dark) black, but you should not dye your eyebrows and eyelashes blonde if you are also dyeing your scalp hair blonde. Instead, if you are dyeing your scalp hair blonde you should make your eyebrows and eyelashes light brown - light black, depending on your skin tone, your preferences, and other relevant factors. In general though, for many phenotypes, dyeing your eyebrows, eyelashes, and scalp hair dark black is the simplest and best course of action.

Grooming and management-

Your eyebrows can be slowly lowered and re-positioned over time. You can accomplish this by targeting areas with topical hair growth solutions and shaving down the areas you do not want hair to be. The simple way to go about this is to apply topical hair growth serums (minoxidil or lattise) to the mid-section and along and below the bottom portion of the eyebrow. Once you accumulate enough growth in those areas you can slowly and carefully begin shaving the upper portions and over time you can lower the permanent placement of your eyebrows. You can also consult a youtube tutorial or a BOTB Eyebrowmaxxing thread to learn how to best shave your eyebrows. For the eyelashes, you can (and in my opinion should) be using an eyelash curler. This is a great practice to combine with your already dyed eyelashes. It will reduce upper eyelid visibility, enhance the contrast, and more. Eyelash curling serves as one the best softmaxes there is and it is very easy to do. Another option is eyebrow threading and waxing. Many cosmetic salons offer these services and a professional will be able to optimize the shape of your eyebrows faster and probably better than you could do so yourself.

TLDR;

Jett black (dark) dye is usually best
Dye both the eyelashes and eyebrows the same color, dye the hair a slightly lighter color
Do not overdo any of this and avoid looking uncanny. Similarly you should avoid making any of this obvious, ideally it will all be totally undetectable.
Curl your eyelashes
You can also use tweezers and pluck individual hairs that stick out too much
Lower and perfect the position of your eyebrows
