The problem with most defences is that racial groups are based on physical differences of real people in reality. If the police say "be on the lookout for a white male", you would not be looking for someone with Black, Asian or Hispanic physical features. If you were asked to describe your Asian friend Goku and you said he has blue eyes and blonde hair the listener would assume he is a white person with Japanese nationality. While it is possible to change hair,skin and eye color we still associate these traits as contributing to someone's actual racial profile or the profile they are mimicking for style reasons.

The Race problem with Anime is basically that it often requires people to suspend the enduring perceptual rules of race on Earth without explicitly saying so. This is perhaps easier in a mostly racially homogenous place like Japan, but in the West, which actually has many people from many places in the world and hundreds of years of racial conflict, its very difficult. That's why this argument will persist and why both sides are correct for different reasons. Its up to creators to take into account international perception when they design and write characters.
