A decade ago, both were pretty non-nt in the West. People who read comics were dweebs and manga/anime fans were were just closet otakus. I was into Naruto and Bleach since I was 10 so I basically watched anime/manga culture's development over the past decade.

Around 2015/16 (In middle school at the time) and anime's becoming a lot more popular. I wouldn't say it was NT yet, but this is when a lot of people knew about what it was, especially things like Naruto, Bleach, Fairy Tal, AoT were popular in school. Anime was more popular than comic books, but it wasn't really NT. You got kids like this lol



Since then it's become more and more popular, but around 2020 is when anime genuinely became mainstream. People were watching anime during qurantine, tik tokers like addison rae had crunchyroll, netflix started to pump out a shit ton of anime shows, etc. Even NT jocks are more likely to know about some anime show than the fucking avengers or marvel comics

Just checked google trends and I'm right tbh. Anime is the gen Z thing
