Its not society. Its modern society. Capitalism make humans that way. I will not make a big text about it, but imagine we are living a perfect life where all our necessities are fullfilled in a harmonic cycle. We need food - we run - we get the food - our body is healthy because it got the food. Theres no other obligation so you can nap, talk, play around, use tabacco, marijuana and have sex. All your desires and necessities are fullfilled in a way your body evolved to be. Your desires also are in harmony with nature around you, everything is in equilibrium. You have some discomfourt, that is necessairy for a happy life.
Now someone is born ganancious. He then resolves to make his discomfort zero (He doesnt know that is impossible, discomfort will always exist, you just need to find him in good ways), he doesnt want to run for his food, he then start a plantation. He find a terrain and is able to plant his food there. When he have desire for something he doesnt have, he go to the nearest village and exchange. Suddenly he realizes he is making too much effort in his plantation, he convinces a family to go live with him and start a group where they share the work and the food. He then realizes that if his plantation get bigger he will be able to attract more people and form a bigger group, and thats what he does.
I legit am tired to continue this long ass history but the thing is: It start with trying to resolve a simple discomfort, then it became this insanely complex system that we have today. Where discomfort is way bigger than the start. We are in complete disarmony with everything. And because people are born on this (And also because people are dumb af) they dont have idea they are being fucked. Its a system that valorizes bad behavior. Greed and egoism are the most fundamental traits to thrive in a capitalist society. I disagree very strongly with your thesis, a lot of people are poor because they are good hearted. In Brazil where i live, if you go to poor areas you will find so many good people. These people werent made to this system.

to resume: its not a good thing overall, its just a perpetual cycle. And the only way to get worried is to be dumb enough to not have achieved true conscious, independently of a society judgement to make ethical choices. If you are truly evil or truly dumb, then yes its a good place to be individually. You are going to get judged if you tell the truth of your thoughts to the public mass, but with easy lies everyone will believe in basically anything that appeals to emotion.

Its a way easier and softer life. The person believe that the system they are is the optimal, so they dont have to fight for nothing.
You start being fucked before you are even born. Some ways the system fucked your past generations go to their DNA, the food your mother had during pregnancy is full of toxines, the water she drank is full of plastic, the fish she ate is full of chemichals, the plants she ate are full of pesticides, the animal she ate was created in the worst environment possible, the air she breathed was full of pollution. All this while you were in her womb, all the most fundamental things to live were corrupted.
Then to be born she went with a cesarian, the most unnatural way to give birth, but that somehow is safer (Only thing safer is that they will get more money doing a surgery), right there you also lost a lot of bacteria you should have been exposed in her vagina (GUt microbiome is fucked, brain skin and basically everything is affected). After that you are not breastfeeded, cause her doctor said it was ok to buy an industrialized milk powder in a baby comforter (Face now is fucked, you didnt learned the proper tongue position, brain development is also fucked), then your sleep is worse, cause your cyrcadiam rythm that evolved for millions of years thinks its sun all the time due to electricity (All the thousand of consequences of sleep deprivation), you also spend a lot of time indoors playing video games and watching television, develop a bad posture, lack of social skills, worst brain development, tendecy to mouth breath. The floor and the walls of you own house is full of toxines, you are basically being tortued. Almost because then you go to school, where you are brainwashed with useless information in the time your brain is at his peak of learning, and they teach how you cannot do sport, socialy and have fun, and instead has to sitdown for 6 hours to listen someone talking during 14 years of life. In this midtime you are also fucked hundreds of time, its a system that profit on that. After college, then work 8/7, then marry, then a home, then children, then retirement. A life of useless effort. Basically a slave life without any necessity. It creates the problems and then solves badly, making an infinite cycle where people will say "look how much we are getting better as a society".
The worst is that instead of seeing the problem is with the system, collectively, people will try to fix the problem in the individual esphere. Everyone will use drugs, go to psych, yoga, meditation. All this stuff will mask the problem but not in the long run, way less in the big picture. Its a world full of blind people that are walking in their own shit, and if you try to allert everyone, they will say for you to cover your nose.
