I’m going to present several studies and factual claims. Interpret them as you wish.
One study reported that biracial Asian Americans were approximately twice as likely as monoracial Asian Americans to report having been diagnosed with a psychological disorder.
Another study examined whether U.S. adolescents who self-identified as more than one race differed in health and behavioral outcomes from adolescents who identified as only one race.
Overall, mixed-race adolescents showed higher rates across many of the measured health and behavioral risk outcomes. The pattern was particularly apparent in measures of general health and was also observed for behaviors such as smoking and drinking.
The researchers also examined characteristics that were not health or behavioral risks, including:
Interestingly, mixed-race adolescents generally fell between their two constituent racial groups on these characteristics.
One explanation discussed in the literature was psychological and social stress associated with mixed-race identity. This is the explanation I favour.
There are also issues affecting the interracial couples themselves.
While many people state that they do not consciously hold prejudice toward interracial couples, research suggests that negative reactions still occur at an automatic or subconscious level.
Studies have reported that viewing interracial couples evokes an involuntary disgust response.

- Below 1.00 = the mixed-race group had a lower rate.
- 1.00 = the rates were equal under the authors’ calculation.
- An asterisk (*) indicates that the difference was statistically significant at the study’s chosen threshold.
