I heard that taking an antihistamine with accutane can reduce the ‘purge’, is this true and if so, how long should I be taking the antihistamine for if I plan on doing 60mg for 6 months

Follow up: antihistamines did stop my purge 👍
Why do people here ask questions they could ask chatgpt

Believe me I did, it obviously hasn’t been fed the data
Yes — an antihistamine can sometimes help reduce breakouts or inflammation while on Isotretinoin (Accutane), but it won’t directly stop acne the way isotretinoin does. What it can do is reduce inflammation, redness, itching, and histamine-related skin reactions that sometimes worsen acne.

Why antihistamines may help on Accutane

Research has shown that histamine contributes to skin inflammation and sebum activity. Blocking it can:

  • Reduce inflammatory acne lesions
  • Decrease skin redness and irritation
  • Help with itching and dryness from isotretinoin
Some dermatologists actually combine isotretinoin with antihistamines such as:

  • Cetirizine
  • Loratadine
  • Desloratadine
A few small studies showed fewer inflammatory lesions and faster improvement when an antihistamine was added.
