Any advice on how to grow my hair properly?

for my entire life, I haven't paid much attention to my hair, never tried to find a haircut that suits me, therefore it looked like a piece of shit most of the time. so the last 8-10 months I just go for a buzz because its simple consistent and suits me well.
lately I thought to myself that I wanna try growing it out properly at least once in my life to see if it looks better
my goal is somewhere near tom welling's hair:

what haircuts should I get along the way?
what hair products should I use later on for nice looking hair?
and roughly how much time will it take me to grow that much hair?

Just get a haircut once every 45 to 60 days, tell them you’re growing it out and you just want it to not look awful whilst you’re doing it. Regardless, there’s gonna be a rough period and you just gotta thug it out.
