Hard to believe but 10-20% of the population lack the ability to think words in their head. Instead they conceptualise thoughts visually. But I wondered how do you process abstract or complex thoughts without repeating words in your head?

Never thought people imagined the literal words, for me it's like imagining the concept in on itself, the words don't play I just understand the principle

I don't have it anymore

10 per cent of the population do not have the same experience of an inner voice at all, meaning their thoughts are almost entirely silent, relying on images or abstract concepts instead

Sounds like you are one of them

I'd imagine you'd be able to process information quickly because you don't have to rely on words

But I'd imagine you'd reach a bottleneck when contemplating deep abstract thought or do you just magically get the answer.....Its hard for me to imagine how your mind works

No my imagination or abstract thought process aren't limited, and there's no logical "answer" To actually deep abstract thoughts, and the statistic that says 10-20% of people can't think of words within their head is inaccurate

Well, that's what the research says, about 10% of people are like you

So if you sit in a dark room or read a book you don't hear a voice of words in your head at all?

No I don't hear a "voice of words" You don't understand my point, I don't imagine the words subconsciously its not that i can't but what I do instead is materialize the concept or notion within my head, I believe that when you imagine the words you don't focus on your surroundings? As in you put the words into top priority focus?

But how do you materialise a concept without words? To me it sounds almost magical or like your a computer

"I believe that when you imagine the words you don't focus on your surroundings? As in you put the words into top priority focus?"

Yes, everything else gets blocked out

I do habitually and you probably do too, a concept doesn't have to exist as words.Your brain can represent things in several ways at once for example, imagine a chair without saying the word “chair” in your head. You can still picture its shape, understand that it has a seat and legs, recognize one when you see it,anticipate how it feels to sit on it,distinguish it from a table, none of that requires an internal sentence saying “this is a chair.”

Yes, I conceptualise objects aswell and can visually imagine a chair BUT for complex thought I don't visualise anything- I only hear words because as far as I know talking through it in my head is the only way to rationalise and make sense of something complex

“If A causes B, and B contradicts C, then A can't consistently coexist with C.”
You may experience that as an internal sentencebysentence explanation other than as a visual diagram. Someone else might experience essentially the same reasoning as a spatial structure, intuition, or collection of abstract relationships, the people you spoke about in the beginning likely do it in the form of intuition.

I have no internal monologue and aphantasia while being a diagnosed autist

I wish

I have it but you know when you understand something in your brain you just can’t put it into words?

i think that’s what its like

Yeah but that's the problem- what does "intuition " even mean

I am incapable of understanding how they process thought because my brain is not wired that way

Its like asking me to conceptualise the 6th dimension- I cant do it

Damn, your mind must be completely blank

Or you process data like a machine

What a life

Yeah, but I can only do this with very basic things

For example if I want a glass of water I don't think "I will now stand up and get a glass of water"- I just do it

Seems as tho your brain works like that but all the time, whereas I only do it on very basic automatic tasks. Anything complex I rely on my internal monologue to speak me through it

I think the key issue is that "intuition" is being used too vaguely. In cognitive science, intuition does not necessarily mean some mysterious, wordless sixth sense. It can mean that your brain reaches a conclusion through processes that aren't available to conscious inspection. For example, someone might look at a complicated situation and immediately think:"Something about this doesn't add up." They might not be able to explain why yet. Their brain may have detected patterns based on previous experience

2nd option i simply just know what im thinking without seeing or hearing it and im a extremely fast reader and can solve simple math by looking at it without thinking

I can't wrap my mind around those who don't. It's like they're outwardly human but internally an animal.

So basically you have a superior and more efficient way of processing data

Lucky you

Can you play a song in your head? Can you hear the words?

More machine I'd say, but yeah animals don't have an internal monologue either

Yeah I can play a song in my head and I can hear the words, but if you genuinely ask me randomly in the middle of the street if I can play a certain song in my head, I'll use conceptual representation instead of Auditory imagery

What about when you read a book? Do you hear the characters talking?
