My grandfather and his cousin served in WW2 as soldiers under the British as Pakistan was still a colony at the time. After the war, my grandfather became a policeman. In my family, we still have soldiers and policemen, some even being part of the elite policemen, who are soldier-like police officers, usually sent to eliminate terrorists.

Great grandfather was from alma ata and was one of the few soldiers who actually were deployed by the kazakh ssr, or whatever the territory was called back then to go fight for stalin near stalingrad and volgodonsk. survived the war, died year i was born 2009.

Not a Gujarati really, but back in those days they didnt mind marrying from different places in my family. If I remember correctly, my great grandmother was from Kerala. It was mainly because of being a Railway employee was a bit common for family members
