Any tips to really feel the muscles on the side of the neck while neck curling?

Kinda feel the thing under my chin and the muscles around my thyroid but not the big one son the side I want to hypertrophy for width.. :C

Press your shoulders down before going up. Like do the exact opposite of the shrug and then shrug.
 
On the way down you shrugg your shoulders up?
No. When you have the bar on your hand and neutral position the usual repetition is to simply shrug your shoulders up. But instead of just shruging up, you first press your shoulders down and then shrug up
 
you need to lay on your side and do neck curls to hypertrophy the scalenes and do left and right rotations to hypertrophy the sternocleidomastoids to get a wider neck
