It is played at the adult amateur club level much more than say american football as it was an amateur game until 25 years ago. There are over 3 million registered players globally and 5.3 million non-registered.

It is played seriously in England, South Africa, New Zealand, France, Ireland, Japan and the Pacific Island nations, and less seriously by Argentina, Australia, Wales, Italy and Scotland. Interesting thing about the player numbers, it is really common for teens to play in England but much less play as adults whereas in France it is more played by adults, maybe this means rugby is dying in France or it is getting more popular in England.

Idk it’s mostly an Anglo thing, it always seemed foreign to me. Association football is the dominant sport in the majority of places, that’s a lot more popular
