Are 3D movies supposed to look more 3D than real life? Or is it my narrow IPD? Or both?

The stereopsis effect is more pronounced in 3D movies than it is in real life to me. Are 3D movies made with 3D effects exaggerated on purpose? Or is my real-life depth perception weaker than average because I have a narrow IPD (55.5 mm)? Or both? To what degree does IPD affect how intense stereopsis looks to you? If I put on a VR headset and set the IPD in software to 70 mm, would I see the amount of 3D-ness that a person who has a 70 mm IPD sees in real life? Do our brains adapt to our IPDs and make the difference between what a 60 mm person sees IRL and what a 70 mm person sees IRL not as drastic as the difference seen in the VR headset?

Its just the effect that they can make with the 3d glasses, its very unrealistic and it has to be exaggerated, it seems exaggerated for everyone. I dont think ipd had anything to do with it because the glasses in this case are taking the images and bringing them together, so they are making the effect, not your eyes like you would perceive depth perception and parallax when looking around without the 3d glasses
