Are artists really that miserable and emotionally deep?

This might sound ignorant and cynical but why would artists bother to produce so much output if they're as emotionally unsound as they say they are? If they were they wouldn't have the energy to create their work and/or would've offed themselves a long time ago but they seem to relish in the melancholia and it's the source of their livelihoods. You could even say that they're "anguish hustlers". The exceptions would be artists who actually cut their lives short like Dead from Mayhem and Edouard Leve.
