Are braces worth it?

Thankfully my teeth have always been quite straight and I've never had too many great issues with them, but the biggest falio of my teeth is my gap between my two front teeth. They're so far apart that you could kick a field goal between them. So I'm wondering, would it be worth it to get braces simply to move them closer together? I don't wanna have to wear a retainer for the rest of my life so I'm a bit hesitant to go through with it.

Can anyone educate me or fill me in on their experience?
