jewgle says growing pains are "Soreness in a child's legs that often occurs at night. Despite the condition name, there's no evidence that growth is painful. The pain is likely due to muscle overuse during the day. Pain can be in the thighs, calves or backs of the knees."

The pain is real if your growth spurt lasts for a few months while the growth be very significant.
