Are parallel streams of consciousness possible?

Typically you have one stream of consciousness but what if its possible to experience split consciousness in special circumstances? Suppose a consciousness separate to your own were to emerge within your brain. What if the people in your dreams are actually slightly conscious forks in your mind-stream? On DMT people often claim to communicate with beings that appear like separate entities.

Now what if it were possible to split your mind and create a separate consciousness that acts like a girlfriend to you?
