Been wondering this for a long time, is PSL even objective? Who or what constitutes one facial feature or ratio is better than the other completely impartially?

The golden ratio is because it’s a matter of evolution, all things in nature attempt to grow to the golden ratio/phi (1:1.618) because it’s infinitively self scalable and the most efficient way for growth to occur. The closer you match the ratio, the more attractive you are because you more closely match the mean human proportions. The more you deviate from the ratio, the higher the degree of genetic mutation you have (and the more suspecting you are to illness.

I rarely see it being taken into account when people PSL rate others though. Understandably because it’s a hassle but can one be sure their supposedly objective PSL rating is even impartial otherwise?

PSL has attempted to define ideal ratios many times.

HOWEVER it is generally agreed that a compact midface is more attractive than a longer one, and a wider face is better than a narrow one (fWHR), etc.

And PSL obviously isn’t just ratios, it includes facial features, bone development, etc.

PSL is the best tool we have in determining relative attractiveness, so we just go by it. There can never be a 100% bulletproof method to precisely define attractiveness because it is subjective to a degree, like u said earlier

Nice post, however, how many people here measure and take into account the ratios of people’s faces and all other factors playing a significant role in facial beauty when making a rating? Almost no one. Understandably, because all the measurements and calculation would take up too much of their time.

You’re right when you say ratios aren’t everything since there’s enough people that are (almost) universally considered good looking but do not match the facial ratios considered essential to facial beauty (like the ideal midface ratio) So, you take other things into account as well, their coloring, facial development, facial width etc...

Some of these playing a bigger role in facial beauty than the other, to what extent, precisely, usually being unclear.
Which makes for either objectively inaccurate/unreliable ratings or subjective ratings, since some consider one specific feature like thick, dense eyebrows (example) more important the the other, consciously or subconsciously.

Overall, meaning we don’t have a foolproof way of determining one’s attractiveness objectively, yes.
