There are arguments to be made in favor of both and it may well depend on the person.
But I generally lean towards the sociopath option because there are just too many ways in which liberal policies secretly benefit liberals. I suspect that liberalism is just a smokescreen intended to help them and that they're merely gaslighting everybody else (ex: Saying open borders is about helping poor migrants when in reality they just want cheaper labor).
The counter-argument is that lots of them simply have extremely poor ability to 'read' society and the people in it, and simply may not understand human behavior or what personality traits are actually rewarded.
