Somewhere in the back of their minds I think they consequences of them being so strict are coming to light, or old memories from their childhood or teenage years reminding them of the things they tried to keep you innocent from. At least in my case. Bits of anger, resentment, bitterness, sadness, getting older, or even nihilsm - in the sense of that some things are certain and they couldn't save you from the harshness of life and comparisons.
