Nationalism is just another cope and consolation price for faggots who reject the ultimate belonging feeling and sentiment, which is the one organized religions and only them can bring.

Tribalism: Loyalty to my tribe because we share the same bonds, lands, etc, yet it is very limited since it's almost impossible for a tribe to expand itself significantly, neither to create a real moral shared sentiment that spreads around different nations and peoples due to such tribal morals would be based on a specific time and environment whoch would befit that one tribe.

Nationalism: The same on a bigger scale with tweaks here and there. Better than tribalism due to it being able to organize and rule over more than one tribe, but doesn’t have the capacity to create a solid moral anchor to revolve around except on very basic elements shared in the land, due to mere survival characteristics of it's peoples developed by it (Just in some cases, not even close to all nations possess such basic morality begginers project).

Organized Religion: A truly succesfull faith has broken the 4th wall and managed to spread it's teachings and morals towards peoples who are internally and externally different

It's the reason why Muhammad and Isa and Musa (Peace and Blessings be upon them) are the most remembered, mentioned and imitated human beings in the entire world after thousands of years, while people like Hitler or Napoleon or any US president will be inevitably forgotten and at best remembered in a few occassions here and there like it happens with greek philosophers or even other world leaders like Atila or Genghis Khan. Yeah they will be rememred since they have left a noticeable footprint, but that's about it, no one will go outside of his way to sacrifice himself or change his way of dressing or eating because of their sake.

The closest to Muhammad, Isa, etc, without being a prominent religious figure is probably Confucius, even though i wouldn't hesitate much to call his philosophy a religion.
