Once you start dealing with stuff that you hate, at first you hate it, but then the more you do it you start to just feel emotionless and alienated from life itself.

(At least that's for me)

Yes, this is called habituation.


When something happens over and over, the feeling it gives us (if everything else is controlled for) becomes less intense.

For example, deformed people used to scare you as a kid, but now they scare you less as you've seen them more (as an adult).

This also applies to positive emotion, and is why songs can be pleasurable at first but get annoying over time.


Could probably explain the mechanism here but I'd need to think about it. Nobody has the attention span on this site to read that anyway.
