mouthbreathing. even though not everyone is a chronic mouthbreather, everyone breathes through their mouth every now and then (if not more). during the time you're mouthbreathing your maxilla and everything connected to it is exposed to gravity without the counteracting force of the lower jaw (which would be there if your mouth were closed) and so it slowly gets pulled toward the ground. this is why some people seem to age so much better than others.

i don't know about what you might suffer from, however, if you have severe sleep apnea then your airway is most likely too narrow.
