I would say when I was four looking forward to my fifth birthday. I knew when I turn five, Mom and Dad would stop beating me.

Dad made the rules in the house. Whenever a kid turns five, no more fist-beatings. But Mom contested. She wanted to continue to beat me. But Dad was persistent. "No, woman! Tomorrow when he turns five, both of us will stop beating him."

"But I don't like him!" Mom said. "I want to beat him at least until he's 7."

Ugh. Dad didn't care for her antagonism so he whipped her. Half of an hour later, she crawled to the bathroom to clean herself up. Dad looked down at me as he punched a closed fist into an opened hand. He said, "It's not your birthday yet." Ugh. He beat me into unconsciousness.
