People think excessive tourism erodes local culture, traditions. Also it is big businesses or outside investors from Punjab and Delhi that make most of the money from tourism while locals don't see any benefits. Kashmiris are still dirt poor while these tourists are all rich and privileged. It creates a sort of resentment. Overall still pretty retarded tho. Even if this was about religion they could found a better target to make a stronger point but all they did is shoot up some old ass tourists. If they had balls they should have done this in one of those hindu shrines.

Kashmir has a distinct culture, language and Sufi-Islamic traditions that differ from both Indian and Pakistan. Kashmir is one of the most heavily militarized zones on the planet. Locals feel occupied rather than protected. Kashmiris were still okay with all this but after Article 370 was revoked in 2019 everything became even worse. Article 370 basically promised Kashmir their own constitution, flag and autonomy over internal matters except defense, foreign affairs but after it got revoked Kashmiris felt stripped of their autonomy and felt even more alienated
