In 2011, researcher Satoshi Kanazawa published a study claiming that British children rated as physically attractive scored, on average, 12.4 IQ points higher than their peers, showing a moderate statistical correlation of r = 0.38 between intelligence and beauty.
How does evolutionary psychology explain this link? The study highlights two complementary theories:
Cross-Trait Assortative Mating: Successful, high-status men (often possessing high IQs) naturally tend to pair with highly attractive women. Because both intelligence and physical beauty are highly heritable traits, successive generations of children inherit both advantages simultaneously.
The General Fitness Model (f-factor): Rather than just a pairing preference, physical beauty and high intelligence are both surface-level indicators of underlying genetic health and developmental stability. In this view, genetically fit individuals naturally develop both traits.
