Rapefugees Welcome
Australian couple raped and assaulted by home intruders in Eastern Melbourne
Sarah, 19, and Brendan, 21, are two of the most recent victims of assaults linked to 'Apex', a Somali gang operating in Victoria's east.
The attack comes as just one of many burglary-related crimes plaguing Melbourne's eastern suburbs this year.

Sarah, the female victim of the attack, bravely re-tells her account of what happened on a night that "changed [her] life".
"We were in bed after getting home from our date night", Sarah recalls, "and I heard a loud bang that I thought came from the front yard".
Upon the couple making their way downstairs, they would see that their unit door had been forced open, with "four or five dark-skinned men standing inside".
"Some of them even looked like they might have had knives", says Sarah - a current first-year political science student at Melbourne University.
Sarah notes that Brendan "tried to tell them we didn't have anything worth stealing", at which point the gang members allegedly forced the couple upstairs to the master bedroom, and began to sexual assault them, all whilst threatening violence if the couple tried to contact authorities.

"It was hopeless, so I just gave up and gave them what they wanted". When asked if she knew what happened to Brendan while this was happening, she stated that he was "in the same room with [her]". He struggled with the attackers for longer, but was eventually "treated the same way" as Sarah.
Sarah mentioned that she didn't want her story to "make anyone think of [her] as a racist" - in fact, she didn't even want to report the crime to the police, for fear of "adding to the racism problem" in Melbourne's eastern suburbs.
The case was reported to the police by Brendan, after what Sarah described as a "disappointing" discussion between the two.

We reached out to Brendan (who is also a current student), but were unable to get in contact with him for comment. Sarah mentioned that the couple had recently broken up, for reasons "not unrelated to [the attack] that night".
