I'm Sri Lankan Tamil, and I've tried various Indian Tamil food from India, but I honestly do love our cuisine compared to Indian Tamil food. I feel like SL Tamil food is similar to South/Central Kerala food, which I've eaten a lot when I was in Kerala for a month. Kerala/Malayali is also my favourite Indian cuisine as well. I think Malaysian Tamil food/Singaporean Tamil food is also amazing. The tropical Tamil cuisines (SL, Malaysia/Singapore) use a lot of fresh ingredients and have amazing seafood dishes and use lots of coconut, whereas I found the Indian Tamil food to be more heavy on spices and dried/preserved ingredients the more north you go

This is also a lesbian

Well, I'm a Sri Lankan Tamil girl, born in Montreal and raised in Vancouver Canada, and for me its different in lots of ways as to how I approach my own feelings and the state of those around me.

To answer the literal question, I knew one Sinhalese girl from highschool who emigrated from Sri Lanka with her family, so she had an accent. They were also pretty well off as they lived in an upscale area in vancouver, owned expensive vehicles, her mom was an accountant, and her dad a doctor, and she only had one younger sister. Her being from Colombo and Im assuming the rich suburb of the city, Cinnamon Gardens, due to where she went to school, she was privileged to have went to a top notch school and in english medium as well. So relatively, she was pretty "modern" in that she knew english enough to make friends and understand the fashion, social and political trends of the country. The friends she made were my friends, conveniently, and so that's how I got to know her first hand.

But I digress. When I first met her, it was through my best friend at the time, where she was in the same drama class as her and she was excited that she found "another sri lankan" for me to know, as it was me and about 5 other Sri lankans in the entire school, though they were also Tamil like me. So from what I can say as my experience with her, things overall went downhill, if I were to describe our relationship in one word.

By downhill, I mean that me, a Tamil girl, felt and experienced microaggressive instances of odd and unsettling things from her, a Sinhalese girl, especially where at the time I had never went to Sri lanka, knew what life was like over there, let alone knew any Sinhalese people either. But upon meeting her, when she first saw me and talked to me, she was really excited, so excited in fact that I was excited to see her excited. She asked me if I speak Sinhalese and i said no, I know Tamil, and i still remember that expression on her face, kind of a "oh" look followed by a deescalation of emotion, which was sudden that I took note pretty easily. Nonetheless though, she still talked to me and we became pretty close in the months after that. I would have considered her my best friend maybe, we were that close.

What I started noticing after the period where she knew me enough to feel comfortable with me, was that there were sly instances where she would slip dubious things about Tamil people or when she assumed things about me based on my race. It didn't help that she told me that one of our classmates, who was a SL tamil guy, looked like a monkey, which was weird especially because its often used as a racial insult against black people or people who resemble black people, because he looked like a black guy despite not being one. Many examples come up: she told me that she would never date a tamil, tamils like forced marriages, that my mom probably wanted me to have incest with my cousin, made many points to make herself distinct from her tamil sri lankan classmates in a way that was condescending or putting down. Eventually we got into a fight over something so trivial and stupid, typical teenage drama-kind of shit, that I stopped talking to her over that. But I dunno, I never met a Sinhalese person, and she might have just been a bad egg that I unfortunately had the pleasure of meeting.
