Wtf:feelswah:
How tall were the Vikings? The average Viking was 8-10 cm (3-4 inches) shorter than we are today. The skeletons that the archaeologists have found, reveals, that a man was around 172 cm tall (5.6 ft), and a woman had an average height of 158 cm (5,1 ft).

Yes average height in Europe has increased a lot over the past century to possibly it's peak and started stagnating, if you look at literature from early anthroplogists in the late 1800s most Europeans were under 170cm (with the exception of nordics who were 170-175cm) btw they actually measured people when collecting these results

They were more like 5’8-5’9 on average, it’s the mainland Europeans and Brits who were 5’6 average

All that matters is nutrition and how much you get of it, people are taller now then they've ever been in modern history despite more sedentary lifestyles

Hunter gatherers were taller
Scots were 6'1 on average in the 1600s
lol proof of these the absolute tallest pre industrial populations ever measured were Dinkas and some south American tribes which went extinct and they were measured at 6'1 (185cm), both of which are fairly small communities

"Very tall stature is defined here as showing an average height of more than 180 cm in males in a pre-industrial society. Even the tallest Europeans - Scots and Montenegrins - didn't reach such numbers until a few decades ago. In Africa, on the other hand, a few such populations exist. They are usually extremely slender in build, with thin bodies, short trunks, and very long legs. Their stature evolved by natural selection in response to dry heat where sweating is efficient, so that long lean bodies have an advantage. The tallest ever measured are the Nuer, where men averaged 185 cm. Dinka, Shilluk, Sara, Makari, and Tutsi are only marginally shorter. Outside of Africa, very tall stature combined with massive, thickset bodies could have been present in some inland Patagonian groups. The natives of Rio Chico and Rio Santa-Cruz reached an average of 185 cm just like the Nuer. Some extinct groups could have been even taller."

@africancel the average roman legionary was 170cm tall, and they described the Illyrians and Germanics as giants. How is it possible that Nordics would be just 172cm on average then? @Maesthetic

True, Germans were described as Giants, Ceaser said they were very tall people, and he was 175cm. Something is very fishy here

A lot of factors go into this than before the average Roman was like 5'4 to 5'7 on average while Nordics were like 5'7 to 5'9, the legionary were noticeably taller on average than the average Roman, what was the context of the statement, sure in combat they would have come across taller men on average with some being well over 6ft, or generally seeing people taller than they were accustomed to seeing.

All the evidence supports what I'm saying especially in the last few thousand years, most of the anthropological information from the 1600s to the late 1800s and the skeletal remains are in line with what I'm saying.

Caesar was around 6' and not 5'7 by all the books that i've read based on all the old historian familia.

Yes there were obviously outliers who exist who were much taller than average but come on there's no evidence of most of this.

I'm not sure but I doubt he was 6' he would have towered over almost everyone around him, he was tall but never described as a gargantuan figure, average Legionary was like 5'7 and they were taller than average, so Caesar would have been massive in comparison to the average person, which I highly doubt.

A legionary was 169cm on average, they described germans and Illyrians as being very tall. That would put them at least at 175cm at the lowest. Still quite close to the 180cm average of germans today.

Also the 1600's were way different then ancient germanic tribal structures, there was no feudalism then, people were more free and had more free meat to eat

He was 6 feet in roman inches, thats actually 5'9 in modern inches. Still not 5'7
could very well be that i mistaken it for the roman inches (human memory is a joke ngl) he still tower over everyone by any account of any historian.

175cm seems feasible imo for the average man, the average warrior would be taller than that which is why it's important to take in the context of the statement.

Caesar was a chad
He actually fought on the frontline with his soldiers
Thats why they loved him so much
at a battle in Hispania
His shield was so covered of arrows/Javelins that they said it looked like a porcupine
Also not claiming his blood after battle to show he fought with them

I like the story where he grabbed a fleeing soldier by the shirt / armor and told him 'the battle is the other way' i wish it's real.
