A Norwood 2 is basically when recession is undeniable, but the "island" of hair at the front has not yet started to form. If you have an "island", then you're getting close to a 3 or are a true Norwood 3.
Examples of Norwood 3s:

Pretty much a dead on NW3.

He might be a little past 3 above, maybe like 3.5.You can see thinning behind island.

Another dead on NW3.
A Norwood 4 is basically when the strip of hair behind the island is thinned out and the island is really small.

This is the classic example. The island is tiny. Its thinned out in a thin strip behind island too.
At Norwood 5 of course the island vanishes more or less along with all frontal hair. At this point crown is gone too most of the time, so you just have that thin strip of hair in the middle.
I'm personally somewhere between a NW2 and an NW3, so I say NW2.5.

I'm at NW 2.5 and no one has commented on my loss except those who I've talked about it with over the months I've been stressing about it.
Also get on fin, currently fin is working so well that my hairline on the left has become a NW2 again and the right seems to be catching up. I'm just waiting for all the new growth to thicken up.

The only thing that stopped diffuse thinning for me was Aspirin, i take around 1.5-2g a day. Worked liked a charm

Diffuse thinning can be a sign of chronically high cortisol levels, and aspirin tanks cortisol..
