Tretinoin

NIGG

▸What is tretinoin?

⚬ Tretinoin is used to treat acne vulgaris or other skin disease. It works partly by keeping skin pores clear.

▸What is the use for tretinoin?

⚬ One of the tretinoin creams is used to treat fine wrinkles, dark spots, or rough skin on the face caused by the damaging rays of the sun. It works by lightening the skin, replacing older skin with newer skin, and slowing down the way the body removes skin cells that may have been harmed by the sun.

▸How to use it

It is very important that you use this medicine only as directed. Do not use more of it, do not use it more often, and do not use it for a longer time than directed.

Before applying tretinoin, wash the skin with a mild soap or cleanser and warm water by using the tips of your fingers. Then gently pat dry. Do not scrub your face with a sponge or washcloth. Wait 20 to 30 minutes before applying this medicine to make sure the skin is completely dry. Applying tretinoin to wet skin can irritate it.

How often should it be applied?

Start slowly by applying a pea-sized amount of tretinoin 2–3 nights per week for the first two to four weeks to allow your skin to build tolerance.

▸How to apply

To use the cream, gel, or lotion form of this medicine:
Apply just enough medicine to very lightly cover the affected areas, and rub in gently but well. A pea-sized amount is enough to cover the whole face.
You need to apply a moisturizer first, then tretinoin followed by more moisturizer. This is called the sandwich method.

▸What are the side effects?

Pain, burning, changes in color, dryness, itching, peeling, redness, scaling, stinging, or swelling of the skin where the medicine is applied
Dryness, pain, redness, irritation, or peeling at the application sit.

Building Up to Different Strengths Over Time

Starting with a lower-strength tretinoin cream is often recommended to allow your skin to acclimate to the product. As you build tolerance, you can gradually move to a higher concentration if needed.

Here’s a typical progression:

Begin with 0.025%: Use this strength for several months, observing how your skin responds.

Consider Moving to 0.05%: If your skin tolerates the initial strength well and you feel you might benefit from a stronger formulation, you can transition to this mid-strength option.

Evaluate the Need for 0.1%: After using the mid-strength for a while, if you and your dermatologist feel it’s appropriate, you can shift to the highest strength.

▸What is minoxidil?

Minoxidil is a medication used primarily to treat hair loss, specifically androgenetic alopecia, which includes male and female pattern baldness.

▸How to use minoxidil

Make sure your hair and scalp are completely dry before applying this medicine.
Apply the amount prescribed to the area of the scalp being treated, beginning in the center of the area. Follow your doctor's instructions on how to apply the solution, using the applicator provided.
Do not shampoo your hair for 4 hours after applying minoxidil.
Immediately after using this medicine, wash your hands to remove any medicine that may be on them.

Do not use any other skin products on the same skin area on which you use minoxidil. Hair coloring, hair permanents, and hair relaxers may be used during minoxidil therapy as long as the scalp is washed just before applying the hair coloring, permanent, or relaxer. Minoxidil should not be used 24 hours before and after the hair treatment procedure.

It is the same procedure using it on your eyebrows, so don't mind it saying hair and scalp.

▸Side effects of minoxidil

Less common

Itching or skin rash (continued)

Rare

Acne at site of application
⚬ Burning of scalp
⚬ Facial hair growth
⚬ Increased hair loss
⚬ Inflammation or soreness at root of hair
⚬ Reddened skin
⚬ Swelling of face

Signs and symptoms of too much medicine being absorbed into the body—Rare

Blurred vision or other changes in vision

⚬ Chest pain
⚬ Dizziness
⚬ Fainting
⚬ Fast or irregular heartbeat
⚬ Flushing
⚬ Headache
⚬ Lightheadedness
⚬ Numbness or tingling of hands, feet, or face
⚬ Swelling of face, hands, feet, or lower legs

⚬ Weight gain (rapid)

IMPORTANT

Stopping minoxidil triggers a reversal of its effects, leading to increased hair shedding and a return to your natural hair loss pattern. The medication supports hair growth only while in use; discontinuation removes this support, causing follicles to re-enter the resting phase

Timeline of Effects:

0–4 Weeks: No visible changes occur as the drug clears the system.
1–3 Months: Shedding becomes noticeable as medication-dependent hairs fall out.
3–6 Months: Hair loss stabilizes, with density returning to pre-treatment baseline.

6–12 Months: Any regrown hair is lost, and the original hair loss pattern resumes.

What is retinol?

Retinol is a form of vitamin A with many uses in skin care. It’s used to treat acne and has anti-aging effects.

What does retinol do for your skin?

Retinol increases skin cell production (proliferation). It helps unclog pores. Retinol also exfoliates your skin and increases collagen production, which can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, giving your skin a fresher, plump appearance.

How do you use retinol?

Clean your skin with a gentle cleanser and pat it dry. Don’t scrub your skin while using retinol products.
Apply retinol in a thin layer to your entire face (be careful not to get it in your mouth, nose and eyes)..
You should use a dose that’s about the size of a pea.
For the first couple weeks of treatment, apply retinol only every other day.

Finish with a facial moisturizer that won’t clog your pores (noncomedogenic).

Retinol for dark spots

Dark spots hyperpigmentation can develop as a result of sun damage to your skin. If you have light to dark brown spots on your face, hands, neck or arms, what you’re seeing is a buildup of melanin, which gives your skin color (pigment). Also called sun spots, age spots and liver spots, these spots are painless, but if you don’t like how they look, there are procedures and topical treatments that may help. Some people find that topical retinol lightens their skin spots, though it takes months and can be irritating to your skin. It’s a good idea to see a dermatologist (a medical doctor who specializes in conditions of the skin) if you’re concerned about dark spots.

How often can you use retinol?

Since retinol can irritate your skin, it’s best to start slow. After a patch test, you might use a product once every few days, and then gradually ramp up to once or twice per day. At first, you might experience redness, itching or burning, but these symptoms go away
as your skin gets used to the treatment.

What are the side effects of retinol?

Dry, irritated skin.
Itching or burning.
Redness, peeling, flaky or scaly skin.

Sunburn.

How can you manage the side effects of retinol?

Use only one retinol product at a time.
Use retinol every other day rather than every day.
Wait 30 minutes after washing your face before applying your retinol product.
Avoid retinol products if you have a sunburn, broken skin or other skin irritations.
Use SPF 30 and wear sun protective clothing and hats to reduce your exposure to the sun.

It does tho, thats what it is mainly used for but it can also be applied to the eyebrows. It may take a while to see progress on your scalp tho.
